Above is our guide Erika Rose Share for the upcoming adventure to Katchemak Bay. Derek Ruckel and I are embarking upon this grand adventure for the sake of fun and new discovery as well as producing one or more YouTube videos for the company Erika works for... Across the Bay Tent & Breakfast Adventure Company. We plan to catch a ride from Homer to our destination via Mako's Water Taxi.

The picture at left was my maiden voyage across the Bay last week as a form of recon, my favorite type of adventure. For many years I wanted to kayak across Katchemak Bay from Homer but was too intimidated by the distance, weather, waves and unknown territory. At long last I went for it and was treated to an adventure of a lifetime! Wind and waves pummeled the kayak on the way over. Then fog rolled in and obscured the route in front of me. Fortunately, a seasoned veteran of the Bay advised me to "keep the wind at your starboard bow" which I did until I was across. Then I followed the coastline to my destination. Days later I returned to Homer intent upon returning to Anchorage to retrieve camera and computer for a return filming expedition.

"Nature is the best teacher." -native wisdom
The Alaska Film School explores and discovers wild, remote wilderness
destinations to document and share with those who may someday visit
these places and for those who may never get to see them in person. We
also engage in numerous forms of stewardship on each adventure such as
cleaning up garbage and debris; mapping, tending to and making new
trails, and hosting Outdoor Education programs for children of all ages.

There are four major types of Adventure provided by the Alaska Film School. My favorite is "Wilderness Recon" wherein one or more of us chooses a destination that none of us have ever been to. We make our way there the best we can and document highlights along the way. We combine this with maps and satellite imagery along with highlights of wildlife, scenery and points of special interest to give staff, students and the global audience a virtual adventure.
